1 in 3 teens overweight/obese!

11-18-11: A very sad study that just came out talks about how 1 in 3 kids are overweight or obese, none were eating all the recommended amounts of healthy foods, and less than half were getting the recommended amount of physical activity!
http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif
You can read more about this story here.

Solutions? Here's my top 10 list. What do you think? What can you add?

1. Parental involvement and modeling
2. Use technology to our advantage, don't just bash it!
3. Exergaming
4. Mobile fitness apps based on game principles (like Mobile Adventure Walks)
5. Make it FUN!
6. Parent involvement/modeling!!!
7. Do a variety of things
8. Think outside of the box
9. Make it social
10. PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT/MODELING

As you can see, if we're going to get a handle on this childhood obesity epidemic, PARENTS must be involved in the process!!! Not just by signing them up for soccer and then dropping them off or sitting on their butts on the sideline, but ACTIVELY getting involved with physical activity themselves!!! Participating WITH their kids.

A physical active lifestyle is caught, not taught, so the parents need to be passing this on to their kids if they want their kids to be active for a lifetime.

Problem is, the parents themselves are NOT physically active, so we need to find ways for the WHOLE FAMILY to be active. If you need help with that, contact me via e-mail or text and this PA Evangelist will do what he can to help you and your family.

Sedentarianism linked to cancer!

11-4-11: More proof that not only should we get our 50-60 mins. of moderate exercise per day, but we should decrease our sedentary time as welhttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifl!

A new study that was presented today shows how being too inactive (sedentary) throughout the day is linked to increased cancer! You can read more about it here.

So think of how you can decrease your sedentary time. I have a pedalar I picked up at Wal-Mart for $25 and whenever I am reading or talking on the phone, I sit back and pedal on it. (My desk is not quite high enough for me to pedal while I'm typing on the computer--like right now, but am working on that).

Some people are able to set up a treadmill or stationary bike in their office and walk/pedal while they are surfing the Net or on their laptop/computer. I don't have that space in my office so do the next best thing.

Also taking breaks during every hour and going out for a quick walk or something is a good way to break up the sedentary time.

In summary, while exercising for 60 mins. is good, being sedentary the other 23 hours is a big risk factor, despite that hour of exercise!

So work on doing both and reduce your risk of cancer!!!

ABCs of Fitness in school day!

7-9-10: A study looked at the ABC's of fitness...but not the alphabet, but the effects of "Activity Bursts in the Classroom"! It's a preliminary study, but I think shows great promise based on the results. David Katz, of Yale, is the lead researcher in this study.

It's a preliminary study, and they discuss the limitations, but I think it's a great start and one that future research can be built upon, especially with utilizing exergaming.

US Surgeon General also promotes PA

2-11-10: Here's another federal VIP, our US Surgeon General, giving her vision for a healthy and fit America. Thx to Pam Sampson (Dept of Public Health, County of San Bernardino) for this post.

Information regarding the Surgeon General’s Vision for a Healthy and Fit Nation 2010. For the full 21 pager visit… http://www.surgeongeneral.gov/library/obesityvision/obesityvision2010.pdf

The Surgeon General, Regina Benjamin, M.D., urges that “child care programs should identify and implement approaches that reflect expert recommendations on physical activity, screen time limitations, good nutrition, and healthy sleep practices,” all of which were key actions at the Healthy Kids, Healthy Future conference in September 2009. Action steps to support the Surgeon General’s goal of standardizing state regulations on physical activity, nutrition and screen time, are being addressed by the HKHF Steering Committee. Through changes in policy, dissemination and implementation of best practices, and continued development of the evidence base in research, the child care environment will become a healthier place for kids to grow and develop.

Blast back to B Active!

1-21-10: Blast to the past! Here's our B Active videos and forum...enjoy!

7-26-09: Hot off the iMac! Here's a sneak preview of the video clip introducing the new Be Active Resource Directory for Desert Sierra Region including San Bernardino, Riverside and Inyo Counties. This vid will be played on Thur. at the PA Forum.

7-30-09: DSHN held it's annual physical activity forum today. There were a lot of great speakers and the audience did a LOT of physical activity--this was the least sedentary conf. most of us have attended!

Great job by Pam, Erin, and Brianna, who organized this conf. and working through all the last minute glitches and snafus!

Check out some pixs from this AM. Video clips to follow soon--the activity looks much better in video!

Here's a video clip of the forum yesterday. Couldn't stop the music during the Zumba music, so bear with me...it was edited on Flip's editing software. ;-)

For the "Be Active Resource Directory", go to SB County website and go to the "Things You Can Use" section. Enjoy!

Sen. Feinstein e-mails on PA!

12-17-09: Check out this e-mail letter from Senator Diane Feinstein on a PA bill I commented on to her:
Dear Dr. Medina:

Thank you for contacting me to express your support for the "Physical Activity Guidelines for America Act of 2009." I appreciate hearing from you and welcome the opportunity to respond.

With the growing prevalence of diabetes, obesity and other chronic conditions, I agree that immediate action is needed to address the roots of our nation's increasing obesity rate. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the percentage of young people who are overweight has more than tripled since 1980. Among children and teens aged six to nineteen years, 18 percent (over nine million young people) are considered overweight. Eating and exercise habits formed during childhood can have lifelong effects. Obesity has been shown to cause numerous health problems and can make existing health conditions difficult to treat. I strongly believe that it is important to increase awareness about obesity and educate the public about proper nutrition and the benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle.

On October 20, 2009, Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) introduced the "Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans Act" (S. 1810). This legislation would direct the Department of Health and Human Services to prepare and promote physical activity guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence, which would be updated every five years. These guidelines would be for children, adults, seniors and people with disabilities, and would ensure that all Americans understand how much exercise they should be getting.

Currently, S. 1810 is pending in the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions. While I am not a member of that Committee, please know that I will keep your comments in mind should this legislation come before the full Senate for consideration.

Again, thank you for contacting me. If you should have any further comments or questions, please feel free to contact my Washington, D.C. office at (202) 224-3841. Best regards.

Also, may I take this opportunity to wish you a happy and healthy holiday season. And may 2010 be a good year for us all.

Sincerely yours,

Dianne Feinstein
United States Senator

APHA, Day 1

11-9-09: Sunday, the first day of the American Public Health Assoc. annual meeting, where over 10,400 people from all over the world have come. We're here in Philadelphia, the city of many firsts.

The business meeting of the newly formed Physical Activity Special Interest Group. They have planned a number of events and sessions--stay tuned! This fine group is led by Dr. Steven Hooker (seated). If you're into physical activity, you need to be a part of the PA SPIG!!!

Got to hear the recently confirmed US Surgeon General Dr. Regina Benjamin. She has quite a background!

I watched her grandfather's underwater shows on National Geographic growing up. Never thought I'd get to hear his granddaughter speak, Celine Cousteau.
Couldn't believe she was nice enough to talk with us. She gave me advice on how to help Summer like diving in the live ocean with real fish. Very friendly and down-to-earth!

Got luck and saw the US Surgeon General in the hallway so got a picture with her.
